To get a permit fromthe county to install the septic system we had to do a perc test. You need to have a minimum of thee holes which are filled with at least 12" of water. Since the well and electricity are not hooked up yet, we put a horse trough in the back of my pick-up, filled it with water and then hooked up a hose to fill the test holes. You measure from the top of the hole to the level of the water every 10 minutes for an hour to calculate the capacity of the soil to absorb water. To get a consistent reading you stick a wire hanger wire into the soil next to the hole which serves as a pointer to the measuring stick. Just looking at it you can see that the soil is very sandy and is well suited for the leach field.
